Ms. Miller's Geometry students at Freeport High School make real world applications to Geometry principles by building kites after their EOC. Students enjoyed seeing how well their calculations turned out by flying their creations on the soccer field. Submitted by Patty Woodard.

Gulf Power Purchases College Scholarship for Walton County's Take Stock in Children Program

On Monday, May 8, 2017, Bernard Johnson of Gulf Power presented WCSD Superintendent, Russell Hughes, Walton Education Foundation Executive Director, MH Carr, and Take Stock in Children Program Provider, Amy Wells with a check for $4,000 to purchase one 2 year college scholarship for a deserving student in the Walton County School District. This 7th-9th grade student, like the others who are in the Take Stock in Children program, will be matched with a volunteer mentor, given college success coaching and their parent/guardian will receive training on how to apply for college and submit other applications to ensure their student the best possible chance to graduate high school and attend college. If the student successfully completes the program they will receive the scholarship purchased this year upon their high school graduation.
Gulf Power is a generous contributor to the Walton Education Foundation year after year.

ECMS 5th Graders Go to the Symphony

WHS senior Emmy Crane has been selected from applicants across the United States to be the student speaker at the 2017 AVID Summer Institute in Tampa, Florida, in June. Emmy submitted a speech to the AVID national directors earlier this year telling her story of how AVID has impacted her life. Before the final decision was made, she had to go through a rigorous interview process and, after further impressing the selection committee, she received the news that she was selected from hundreds of applicants nationwide to tell her story to thousands at this year's AVID Summer Institute.

WDE STEM Career Day with MakerSpace Club

WDE's MakerSpace Club recently participated in STEM Career Day. Students enjoyed learning about everything from PH levels of soil, the chemistry of hair coloring, high tech gadgets used by law enforcement, the technology and photography connection as well as how GoPro cameras are used to check water lines. We would like to say a special thanks to Daniel Leonard with UF/IFAS, Connie Strickland owner/beautician at Bass Style Shop, Alicia Keeter, General Manager of South Walton Utilities, Matthew Key - SRO with Walton County Sheriff's Office, and Rachel Lauen - Photographer with Ultimate Production Company. South Walton High School was named the Florida High School Athletic Association Academic Champions for 2017. In addition, the Seahawk Baseball Team earned Academic Champions for Class 1A. Submitted by Barb Stratton.
