Understanding Bird Beaks at Bay!

This week Mrs. Coleman's first grade class learned about animal characteristics in Science. In order to have the students have a better understanding of different animals and their body functions, we did a wonderful experiment from Mystery Science regarding bird beaks. Students used both a straw and a paper cup to mimic bird beaks. Throughout the excitement, they had to test which beak worked faster in getting food, but also which one was able to pick up food without picking up any rocks. It was truly an amazing hands on activity and one of our favorite lessons so far!

Ace Hardware Supports Agriculture Education at WMS

Recently, Mr. Jonathon King, store manager of ACE Hardware, and Mr. Bobby Proffitt visited WMS' Foundations of Agriculture class. Mr. King donated ACE buckets, weeding tools, planting shovels, and trowels for every student. They also donated two loop hoes and two heavy duty push brooms. Students have been using the tools to beautify the campus by pulling weeds and planting flowers and vegetables to be used in the beds around campus. WMS appreciates ACE Hardware's generosity and support!

FES Students Implement New QuaverMusic Curriculum

Students from Freeport Elementary are excited about the new QuavverMusic interactive music curriculum that has been purchased for the Walton County School District elementary schools.  Quaver Music’s General Music Curriculum is a computer based comprehensive set of curriculum resources built on a foundation of standards-based lessons full of interactive elements for classroom music, and provides students access at home! 

These FES students are using the program for student led vocal warm-ups, and rhythm identification.

WMS and WHS Choral Students Ace First Round of All-State Auditions!

September 21, 2017

Several Walton High and Walton Middle students attended the first round of All-State Chorus testing on September 18. Students tested on rhythm and melodic listening skills and identification, chord analysis, intervals, key signatures, time signatures, and vocabulary. WHS and WMS each had four students promoted to the next level, and they will compete in Sight Reading this weekend.

WDE Kindergartner's Learn Letter "Mm" with Macaroni!

September 21, 2017

Mrs. Kristin Peak’s Kindergarten class at WDE just completed a unit on the letter Mm. Students made macaroni Mm’s by writing uppercase and lowercase Mm’s and then tracing them with macaroni noodles. They did a great job with this activity!

MSE 3rd Graders "Moustache" You a Question!

These students "moustache" you a question!

Maude Saunders third graders are learning how scientists collect and communicate data. The students had to think of a question to ask their classmates, give them options to choose from, then complete a data chart on the data collected, and communicate their findings to the class. Being a scientist is fun, but it's even more fun with a moustache!

Mrs. Lynne Martin's Classes Experience "Book Tasting" Event!

September 21, 2017

Recently, English 2 students in Mrs. Lynne Martin's classes experienced a "Book Tasting" event!

Students were welcomed into Chez Marteen's Book Cafe with reservations for special courses such as Biography/Autobiography, Mystery, and Realistic Fiction. Students were invited to sample each course and review one of their samplings. Students sampled other courses and enjoyed hors d'oeuvres as they reflected on the event. Reviews were overwhelmingly positive:

 "I have three books I want to read now!"

"I enjoyed getting to explore new books."

"I did like a book that I didn't think I would."

 Future "book tastings" are already being planned due to the overwhelming success of the event.

FHS SGA Hosts Penny War to Raise Funds for Child Clothing Project

September 21, 2017

The FHS Student Government Association hosted a penny war to raise money for the Junior League of the Emerald Coast's Child Clothing Project. The students and staff collected $661 for this worthy cause and have challenged the other high schools in the district to top our donation.

WMS Enjoys a Monday Visit from Superintendent Hughes

Superintendent A. Russell Hughes stopped in at Walton Middle School on Monday, September 18, 2017.  He walked around the lunchroom, chatting with eighth grade students, offering them friendly words of encouragement.  Thank you, Superintendent Hughes, for showing up for and supporting WMS students!
